Why you should have a hobby as a stay-at-home mommy?

Being able to spend every day with my little baby and see her develop as a stay at home parent has been one of the greatest joys in my life. I’ve never missed a milestone, and I’m raising the world’s biggest mommies daughter (yeah me!).

Although being a stay at home parent has been an incredible experience for me, being cooped up in the house every day sometimes feel lonely. I have an incredible boyfriend who supports me and the most gorgeous young child who keeps me on my toes at all times of the day, but being alone in the house when it’s quiet can be psychologically draining.

That is not the reality I desire for myself, as much as I like watching TV shows and resting. I can’t help but worry about how much time I’m squandering, and how I won’t have this much time to discover myself in the future.

That’s when I realized that writing was a terrific method for me to express myself and give me a daily chore. Hobbies were never a priority in my life until I discovered how much I needed one.

Who Is a Stay-at-Home Mom?

A stay-at-home mom (SAHM) is a woman who remains at home to care for her children and manage her family. She may have one or more children, ranging in age from newborns to teens in high school.

A stay-at-home mom in today’s world is someone who may or may not have quit the workforce to raise her children at home. She may be well-educated and have left a six-figure job to be at home with her children. She might be thinking about going back to work once her kids are older. Or she may have chosen to be a stay-at-home mom before going to work.

The number of stay-at-home women who opt to homeschool their children is growing in tandem with the number of homeschoolers.  The number of stay-at-home parents who also work from home is also on the rise.

Why hobbies are good for mom?

Moms should develop practices that help them maintain balance, perspective, and fulfillment in their daily lives. Here are some of the causes behind this. They keep us sane, in a nutshell.

Gives perspective

Moms’ hobbies assist us escape the monotony of our daily lives. Being a mother is both enjoyable and stressful in equal measure. Staying at home for the most of the day may be lonely, but having a pastime to fall back on in the evenings or on weekends may help put things in perspective.

In addition, hobbies can help you divert your attention away from your problems when your children are going through a difficult time or the weather is keeping you indoors.

Rejuvenate your mind

I feel inspired, recharged, and more patient after spending a few hours on one of my hobbies.


I always feel motivated after sewing, photography, or decorating tasks. I believe it’s because I feel in charge of the project and that I’ve achieved something worthwhile.

Prevents you from losing your sense of identity

Stay-at-home moms frequently lose their sense of self. It’s true that shifting from caring about oneself all day to worrying about others is difficult.

From your daily routine to your clothing and physical appearance. There isn’t much that stays the same after becoming a mother. Finding a pastime or something you’re excellent at to do with your leisure time might make you feel more in control and pleased.

Express your creativity

I think that God has bestowed abilities, abilities, and creativity on each of us. The perfection of the end result is not a criterion for success in creativity. It’s possible to find satisfaction in expressing oneself in a creative way…

If you make it a practice to use your creativity, you’ll feel like a more full version of yourself.

Keep yourself busy

Being a stay-at-home mom is a demanding job. There’s always something to clean or prepare, whether or not you have the most well-behaved child, and you want to use any opportunity to rest. But what happens when your binge-watching session comes to a close?

No, it isn’t the end of the world.

The duties will eventually be completed, and when there is nothing left for you to do, have a backup plan that you can focus on.

Don’t lose who you are outside of ‘mama’

Being a mother was something that came effortlessly to me. It’s something I like doing and am quite proud of. I often wonder if I’ll ever be able to do anything else as well as I do mothering.


I’m not sure I’ll ever be as excellent at anything as I am at being a mother, but it’s critical not to lose your sense of self and to realize that you’re so much more than that! Not that there’s anything wrong with taking pleasure in being a parent, but having something else you’re excellent at or something you take pride in doing will assist with the transition of letting go once your child gets older and more independent.

Got some extra money

Why wouldn’t you want to do something you enjoy while still earning money? There are a plethora of activities you might pursue that also benefit others!

Art is a broad interest that may lead you in a variety of ways, and you never know who can fall in love with your work and become a major fan!

It’s perfectly fine to merely work on a pastime for joy, but other people may choose to turn their time and effort into money, which is advantageous in many ways!

Open your mind

Have you ever felt that you spend your days as a stay-at-home parent largely talking to a baby and singing the Daniel tiger songs over and over in your head?

Social engagement becomes less and less important, and it almost appears that you lose the ability to converse with grownups. My baby child and her most recent discoveries are the only things I find myself talking about these days. Yes, it is an excellent topic to discuss; but, how many milestones does my child truly accomplish each week?


Having a pastime provides you something to talk about with other people, especially if you don’t have children, since some people can’t connect to that.

Find someone who enjoys the same pastime as you and connect with them! It will assist you in keeping your social skills up to date.

Relax & keep your sanity

Do you ever had the feeling that you’re hearing a sobbing baby in your head while your infant is completely comfortable and not even screaming? You could start to believe you’re going insane since the sound is like a broken record playing!
When you’re a mother, keeping your sanity is crucial, especially if you’re a stay-at-home mom whose full-time job is raising a child.

They say that a happy mommy equals a happy baby (and even a happy husband), and that if mother isn’t happy, no one else is either.

Spending some time alone working on a project or simply doing something you enjoy may be really calming. It has a way of lulling your head into the space it needs to be in as a full-time mother. Even if it’s only for 30 minutes, it’s vital to divert your attention away from the infant!

Your kid should be your first priority (if not your only focus), but don’t forget to take care of yourself every now and then.

For exceptionally busy moms, hobby ideas might be simple. You undoubtedly have an idea of your own, but if you need some inspiration, consider the following:

  • Sudoku Apps for Android and iOS
  • Reading a book that isn’t about parenting or education (unless education IS your hobby)
  • Listening to music, a podcast, or an audiobook
  • Doing yoga or another invigorating and pleasurable kind of exercise

There are a plethora of ways to invest in yourself as the amazing individual that you are. Even though it feels like it takes something away in the near term, improving your own self-care will only improve your effectiveness as a parent.
