What are the best things a girl needs from her mom? As a mother of a 4-year-old girl, I realize that having a daughter has been one of the best experiences in my life. However, along with happiness, there is a great responsibility that comes from the relationship with our daughters. And it’s really important to know what a girl needs from her mom.
It is vital that we know things a girl needs from her mom
Life is not easy, and to achieve good things, we have to try our best. And it is the same in the mother-daughter relationship. It’s hard to avoid quarrels with your little girls in daily conversations and that’s why we should know what a girl needs from her mom.
If you have more than one child, like me, you know that each of them has needs that are expressed and met in various ways. I always hear much emphasis on the father-daughter relationship and I believe this is such a critical relationship for a young girl. However, it is strange that I don’t usually hear about the importance of a mother-daughter relationship.
8 things a girl needs from her mom
1. She needs your belief
Well, I need to say that being one of your daughter’s biggest fans is always a great way to instill confidence. Especially, when our daughters are young, it is much more important for them to feel like they can conquer the world. If you let your daughter feel that you do not believe in her, it is likely she will not believe in herself.
That’s why, the earlier you can instill belief in your girl and allow her to know without a doubt that you have confidence in her, the sooner she will learn to believe in herself. This is the very first among the key things a girl needs from her mom.
2. She needs you to give her space to make mistakes and learn for herself
This is considered to be one of the most challenging ones. I don’t know any mother that would like to watch their child walk down a dangerous road with obvious mistakes or heartache ahead. But in fact, it’s hard for us to control our daughter’s lives and of course, we can’t prevent them from making mistakes, nor should we.
Here, I suggest that the best thing we can do is to support our children through all the ups and downs. Our little girls need to know they are not perfect, that they will make mistakes for the rest of their lives. And we strongly believe that they can overcome those mistakes, learn from them, and be better because of them.
3. She needs you to validate that her worth comes from within
Admit it, ladies! Growing up nowadays is brutal. Young girls are mean and social media begins to open a whole new world of false appearances, expectations, bullying. Your daughters need to know that you are proud of her. They love knowing that you think they are beautiful and your love is truly unconditional.
Yes, Your girls want you to validate her worth comes from within, not performance, appearance, or success. And it is vital to extend grace to our lovely girls. Also, keep teaching them no matter how many or how big of mistakes they make, they will still be worthy of love and forgiveness.
4. She needs you to model self-awareness and self-care
One more important key among the things a girl needs from her mom is modeling good self-awareness and self-care. An effective way to model self-awareness is to acknowledge your emotions. You need to pay attention to this as your daughter is likely to pick up on your emotions, especially the negative ones.
This emphasizes that you need to verbalize your emotions and the reasons for them. I usually do that and realize this way is helpful. For example, you can say “I’m stressed today because I’ve not finished my work”. Then, your girl will know how to express her emotions healthily.
Although there are times we don’t know exactly why we are like that or doing that way, we should still teach our daughters to acknowledge that. It is like “I feel unhappy today, but I don’t know why”. It is important for us to keep this in the list of things a girl needs from her mom.
5. She needs mother to tell her how to respect herself
You should notice that your daughter will watch you a lot and she will pick up on how you act, how you treat others, and also how you treat yourself.
So, one more key among the things a girl needs from her mom is that mom will let them see how to respect herself. Yes, your daughter needs to see what it looks like for a woman to value and respect herself. Also, let’s be confident in yourself and your girl will learn from you.
6. She needs mom to spend time with her
Considering spend much time on your girl is also one of the things a girl needs from her mom. Time is so valuable. So, let’s take your girl on mother-daughter dates and pursue her heart. Spend time asking her questions. Try to listen and let her know you hear her. Investing time to teach her essential life skills such as cooking, sewing and cleaning, etc. These things, in the future, may tủn into quality time rather than chores. These will be a great outlet for deeper bonding. This is also among great tips for young mothers.
Mom, don’t forget to build traditions with your daughter that are both specific to you and her. Traditions are considered great ways that create the best memories and celebrate things you value (like your girl).
7. She needs you to say the truth about yourself and teach her to do the same
You need to note that negative self-talk can be destructive to your young girls. I have seen too many girls that let negative self-talk define them and impact the harmful decisions they make. That’s not good at all.
So, mom, let’s keep in mind that whenever your daughter says something negative about herself, make her talk about 3 positive things about herself. It is also one of the things a girl needs from her mom. This can transition her thinking and also let you reinforce the importance of positive self-talk. That means one of the things a girl needs from her mom is that mom should not put ourselves down.
Let me give you an example, if we usually say “I look fat”, “I’m bad” or “Nobody likes me”, we are teaching our daughters that it’s okay. About me, anytime my daughter says anything positive about her, I praise it by agreeing with her. Also, I don’t forget to acknowledge the power of saying positive things about my little girl.
8. She needs her mother to give her permission to disagree and say “No”
This is also listed in the vital things a girl needs from her mom. Don’t misunderstand as this is different than allowing them to disobey or be disrespectful. If we teach our daughters to care about themselves, they need to learn to refuse, to say “NO” and know that their “NO” answer matters and should be respected. This will be a means to stand up for your girls, set boundaries as well as develop the skill for self-protection.
